Lighting Fixture Types Defined

Although the original light fixtures that were used thousands of years ago to harness fire were very simplistic in nature, many of the elements used today remain the same. Today’s light fixtures are often an art form. From the minimalist to art deco, renaissance to rustic, and everything in between, lighting manufacturers attempt to offer something for everyone when it comes to light fixtures.

Lighting fixtures come in a wide variety of styles for various functions. Some are very plain and functional, while some are pieces of art in themselves. Nearly any material can be used, so long as it can tolerate the heat and is in keeping with safety codes. Light fixtures tend to be classified based on the use of the light, the installation, or the type of lamp that is used.

Individual lighting fixtures that are chosen for use around the home have a dramatic effect on the final appearance of each room. There are so many types of fixtures that are aimed to fulfill specific lighting needs around the home, from task lighting to decorative lighting, there is sure to be a fixture that fits into every style and budget.

Below is a description of some of the most common types of light fixtures and their most common uses. Each fixture type has countless possibilities and may be used both functionally and fashionably within the home.

Chandelier Lighting

chandelier A Chandelier is a branched decorative ceiling-mounted light fixture with two or more arms bearing lights. Chandeliers are often ornate, containing dozens of lamps and complex arrays of glass or crystal prisms to illuminate a room with refracted light.

When looking to make a statement, the chandelier is hands down the most impressive light fixture. Chandeliers have been used in a variety of settings:
  • Multi-layer crystal chandeliers are used in the lobbies of some fancy opera houses
  • In a home’s formal dining room
  • In a foyer
  • Even in a Master Bedroom

A chandelier says luxury, glamour, drama, and upper class living.

The American Lighting Association says that,

Today chandeliers rate as a brilliant idea just about anywhere -- from modest homes to magnificent mansions, contemporary digs to traditional houses. They dangle decorously in almost every room of the house.

The increase in chandelier use is credited partly to the fact that average ceiling heights have increased over the years from eight feet to more than 10 feet.

chandelier application
When choosing a chandelier for a room, be sure to consider the size of the room, the light quality that you desire, and if you wish to include a dimmer switch with the lighting. A light dimmer is usually a low cost addition that allows you to change the mood of the room simply by fine tuning the lighting from a switch.

How to Hang a Chandelier

Wall Sconce Lights

A wall sconce is a lighting fixture that mounts on a wall. There are many types of wall sconces which can be categorized by mounting methods into three categories: recessed, semi-recessed surface mounted wall sconces.

wall sconce

Sconces can also be categorized by the position of the lamps (bulbs) as:

Up light - when the light shines up from the fixture
Downlight - when the light shines down from the  fixture
Up/Down light - when the light shines both up and down from the fixture.

Wall sconce lighting is perfect for rooms that need that final ray of light to set the mood. Sconce lighting provides a warm glow to the walls and area it surrounds. Sometimes, a wall sconce is the perfect addition to a room to highlight a specific area, or to create asconce application certain atmosphere. Sometimes, wall sconces are useful when the ceiling is too high to install additional light fixtures. Sconce lighting can complement other elements in the space without overpowering the room.

Sconce lighting can be used to make a grand statement in small areas or simply to light a dim hallway or stairwell. Wall sconce lighting can be useful in just about any room in the home from lining a dark hallway, to flanking a luxurious mirror in the master bathroom or accenting the sides of a bed. The possibilities with sconce lighting are endless and amazing.

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting is by definition a branched lighting fixture that is often ornate and hangs from the ceiling. The term pendant lighting generally refers to a lighting fixture that is mounted on a stem or a pendant.

pendant

A wonderful advantage of the pendant light is that the stem length from which the pendant hangs is very flexible. This makes pendant lighting great on a sloped ceiling as you are able to adjust the stem length of individual pendants so that one row of lighting may shine from the same level. Often times, pendant light fixtures are designed with a sloped ceiling in mind so the angle of the pendant may be adjusted as well to keep it in line with the angle of the ceiling.

Pendant lighting can be used to create an intimate space by lowering the light source.pendant application Often, restaurants use pendant lighting over each individual dining table, and clubs or lounges use pendant lighting to create a special atmosphere for guests.

In the home, pendant lighting can be used in a variety of different areas. Many people like to use pendant lighting above the breakfast bar or over the island in the kitchen. There are also pendant lights that are specially designed to be placed in a child’s bedroom.

Vanity Lighting

A vanity fixture is the fixture that is placed around the vanity mirror and sinks in the bathroom. Common vanity fixture designs include a bar or light strip with a row of lights vanityabove the mirror, or sconces on either side of a mirror.

The purpose of vanity lights is to illuminate the face softly but brightly enough to perform various activities such as brushing your teeth, shaving, or applying makeup. In order to evenly light the face without creating a shadow or a glare, it is important that vanity lights are not directional and are free to shine equally in all directions.

The use of vanity lights greatly increases the lighting in a bathroom. Although some bathrooms are small enough to use a close mount light as the sole light source for the room, it is important to always have adequate lighting which in most cases means the addition of vanity lights.

Flush Mount or Close to the Ceiling Lights

flush mount Flush mount light fixtures are ceiling fixtures with the internal components installed in the ceiling so that the dome of the fixture is flush with the ceiling. Dallas International Lighting Market Verses Las Vegas Lighting Convention

From across the United States and around the world retailers as well as manufacturers gather semi annually at separate events known as the Dallas International Lighting Market and Las Vegas Lighting Convention to display new trends in the lighting and ceiling fan industry.  Both markets are held twice annually during the summer and winter.

dallas market center logoThe Dallas International Lighting Market is held simultaneously with various other markets at the Dallas Market Center located at 2100 Stemmons Freeway in Dallas, Texas.  During the 2007 Lighting Market, exhibitors offered numerous giveaways including plasma televisions, all inclusive vacations, GPS navigational systems, and a chandelier that retailed for $4,500 from Fine Art Lamps

During 2007 the Dallas Market Center celebrated its 50th anniversary and introduced plans for a 500,000 square foot expansion to the Trade Mart.  This expansion doubles the lighting marketplace to more than seven million square feet.  The Trade Mart expansion is the only building that has been custom designed for the lighting industry from the ground up. This only quantifies the reason why Dallas International Lighting Market is considered by many retailers and exhibitors alike as the “Lighting Capital.”

“The lighting fixtures display in Dallas is the biggest trade show for the lighting industry in the US.” Said Santorelli, Dina. "Dallas Center shifts to draw lighting."

Up for exhibit at the Dallas Lighting Convention are more than 260 lighting manufacturers including Westinghouse Lighting Corporation, a leading manufacturer of more than 5,000 lighting products, and Hinkley Lighting a Cleveland, Ohio based distributor of high quality, decorative lighting fixtures for both the residential and commercial markets.

A couple hundred miles away, a similar event is held in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The Las Vegas Lighting Convention is also held semi annually and attracts thousands of retail buyers and sellers from around the world.

las vegas market logoThe Las Vegas Lighting Convention is held at the World Market Center, located at 495 South Grand Central Parkway in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The World Market Center is a planned tradeshow complex that is rapidly growing in size with a projected size of 12 million square feet upon completion.

Market representatives say that "the World Market Center, which debuted in 2005, will be the largest most comprehensive trade show complex in the world when complete."

In Las Vegas, from high end contemporary lighting products at moderate prices made by Adesso, to lamps made by Uttermost, retailers can view a variety of lighting products from over 150 different manufacturers under one roof.  The World Market Center is renowned as a place where World Class Exhibitors and World Class Buyers come together to create a World Class Experience.

Although both markets have many of their own unique exhibitors, there are some shared similarities between the two.  Las Vegas Lighting Convention and The Dallas Lighting Market both offer exhibits from some of the top names from within the lighting industry, such as Dale Tiffany, “the world’s foremost designer, marketer, and producer of Art Glass Lighting.”  Dale Tiffany is just one of the many manufacturers that maintain permanent showrooms at both the Dallas Market Center and the World Market Center.

Other manufacturers that attend both markets include:

  • Cal Lighting, a 25 year old company from Ontario Canada
  • Genie House West, a New Jersey based Fixture Company whose products are all American made
  • Glow Lighting based out of Canada and specializing in crystal lighting for both the residential and commercial markets
  • Quoizel, one of the nation’s leading designers and distributors of decorative home lighting.

Q and A on Outdoor Lighting

Question. There were some break-ins in my neighborhood this past year, so I want to install some outdoor security lighting which can also be used when entertaining.  What are my options and which outdoor light fixtures are energy efficient?

Answer. Installing outdoor lighting is one method of reducing the risk of nighttime break-ins, but it should be planned with a variety issues in mind.  Most outdoor lighting consumes a lot of electricity, contributes to global warming, and creates problems for nocturnal wild life.  Also, in many major cities outdoor lighting contributes to vast amounts of light pollution making it difficult to enjoy a starry night.  More information about light pollution and it's effects can be found at IDA

What Makes a Good Energy  and Environmentally Efficient Outdoor Light?

The keys to energy and environmentally efficient outdoor lighting are selecting the proper type of bulb, light fixture design and shortest on-time period. Using just two 150-watt floodlights at night can increase your electric bills by up to $100.00 per year. With fixed floodlights, would-be thieves can often figure a way to get around them.

halogen outdoor lightIn areas where you will not need the lighting for entertaining, install motion-sensing light fixtures or add-on motion-sensing switches. This greatly reduces the amount of on-time, increases the bulb life and reduces light pollution. Since the light is not on when the intruder arrives, he does not know to avoid it until it switches on from his movement. This generally scares him away.

For areas where you want the outdoor lighting for both security and entertaining, select fixtures which direct the lighting downward in the specific areas needed. This minimizes light pollution in the night sky and may allow you to use lower wattage bulbs to save electricity.  Add-on shields are available for existing floodlights you have already have.

As you would indoors, use fluorescent tubes and CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) outdoors.  These are four times more energy efficient than standard incandescent bulbs and last 10 times longer.  The light quality is now available in similar color rendition.

Some CFL's may not perform properly in temperatures under 32 degrees. If you find this to be a problem, use halogen bulbs or LEDs.  Halogen bulbs are not as efficient as CFL's or LED's, but they are 15 percent more efficient than standard incandescent bulbs and last twice as long.  Halogen bulbs produce a very white light which is excellent when entertaining and it may enhance the appearance of your landscaping.

metal halide outdoor lightAlthough they are substantially more expensive to install, LPS (low pressure sodium) outdoor lighting fixtures are very efficient.  They use less than 15 percent as much electricity as incandescent bulbs. The only drawback is that they take time to heat up and come to full brightness and the light is a no chromatic yellow.

The newest most expensive outdoor lighting uses LED light bulbs.  These LED's use much less energy and last up to 50,000 hours.  They main problems are low light levels and cost.

How to Select the Housing for a Recessed Lighting Project

First and foremost make sure that your recessed housing carries a UL Listing, this shows that the electrical fixture has been evaluated for compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC).  Recessed lighting is actually built into the structure of the home so these fixtures are subject to very strict standards.

I recommend using the Lithonia Lighting Recessed Fixtures for any recessed application.  All Lithonia incandescent recessed downlights include a thermal protector that stops power to the fixture when the fixture becomes to hot.  This happens when the fixture is installed with a lamp that exceeds the rated maximum wattage.

When choosing a recessed housing you must know a few things about your ceiling conditions.

Different Ceiling Plenum Heights Use Different Recessed Housings

Plenum is the space above the ceiling

Recessed lighting housings come in many different depth measurements; there should be enough plenum above the ceiling for the fixture to fit. If you have attic space measuring will not be necessary. If you do not have attic space you will need to know the beam or ceiling joist depth. These ceiling joists are most commonly made of wood and are normally 2x8, 2x10 or 2x12. The actual depth of the ceiling joist will be 3/8” less than the 2x8, 2x10 or 2x12 name. That means the 2x8 is actually 7-5/8” deep. Take that measurement and add the thickness of the ceiling which is normally ½” to 5/8”.

Most recessed lighting fixtures are 7-1/2” deep which will fit in the standard 2x8 roof construction. If your ceiling is lower Lithonia Lighting manufactures a standard Low profile recessed housing that is 5-1/2” deep for lower ceiling plenum heights. NOTE: The deeper the recessed housing the less visible glare will be seen from the light bulb because the light bulb is higher in the recessed housing.

Standard recessed fixtures are the low cost option

Premium recessed fixtures offer the ability to use higher wattage lamps, more trim options, better shielding and light reflection

What Recessed Housing to Use for an Insulated Ceiling?

Recessed lighting installed in insulated ceilings must be able to handle heat build up and be UL Listed for this type of application. Insulated ceilings must use IC-Rated recessed housings. IC rated housings place the light bulb a little closer than NON-IC Rated housings to limit heat. This increases glare and IC-Rated housings use lower wattage light bulbs to reduce thermal stress.

What Recessed Housings to use for Existing Ceilings?

When your ceiling is existing and you are installing recessed fixtures as a remodel project use a remodel recessed housing a.k.a. remodeler. A remodeler is a frameless recessed downlight that can be installed in an existing ceiling with out damaging the ceiling. After measuring and positioning the location of where the recessed fixture will be installed, cut out a whole based on the factory instructions for the fixture and slide the remodel housing through the ceiling cut out. (Installing recessed fixtures will be covered more in my post on recessed fixture installation)

If your ceiling is open you will want to use New Construction recessed housings. A new construction recessed housing comes complete with hanger bars that attach to the ceiling joists between the ceiling joists.   (Installation will be covered in a future post)

My next post will cover selecting the proper recessed lighting trim for the desired lighting function.

How to Choose Recessed Lighting for your Home

Choosing recessed lighting for your home can be very difficult when done right.  In the next five posts I will go into great detail on selecting the right type of recessed downlighting for your space.  Recessed lighting can be a very effective light source yet literally unobtrusive.

What type of lighting function do you want to add to the space?

The first step in choosing recessed lighting is to figure out your lighting needs in the space you are working with.  The following definitions will be very useful.

General or Ambient Lighting using Recessed Lighting

recessed ambient lightingWhen you are trying to light a complete space you are usually performing general or ambient lighting with the recessed downlights that you choose.  This is done by installing the recessed lighting in a evenly balanced pattern in the ceiling to create uniform illumination.  Ceiling heights and the depth of the trim should be taken into consideration to produce glare-free lighting; I will share more of that information in another part of this series.  General lighting is best when used with a light dimmer.

General or Ambient Recessed Lighting is usually used in

  • Living rooms
  • Great Rooms
  • Kitchens
  • Bedrooms
  • Foyers
  • Hallways

Perform Task Lighting with Recessed Lighting

recessed task lightingTask lighting is performed when you want to provide higher levels of light for activities such as food preparation, reading, grooming and many other specific tasks where increased light is needed.  These recessed fixtures should be centered uniformly over the work space.  The closer the recessed cans are the higher the light level of course.  General lighting is best when used with a light dimmer.

Recessed Task Lighting is usually used in

  • Kitchens (over islands or food prep areas)
  • Offices (over desks or bulletin boards)
  • Bathrooms (to high light grooming spaces, showers and tubs)
  • Bedrooms (used in reading spaces or sitting areas)

Accent Lighting is Easily Done with Recessed Downlights

Use a concentrated beam of light to high light specific objects or surfaces.  Accent lighting has the best effects when the object has a very high light level and the surrounding light levels are much lower.  Accent lighting is great when you want to high light wall hanging artwork, sculptures or entries.  General lighting is best when used with a light dimmer.

Accent Lighting is usually used in

  • Dining Rooms (chandeliers and china)
  • Living Rooms (Sculptures and artwork)
  • Great Rooms (Sculptures, sitting areas, and artwork)
  • Bedrooms (Special areas)

Wallwashing when using Recessed Lighting

Wall washing creates a uniform light on a wall to make that wall stand out and make the space seem expanded.  This is a unique lighting function that can be used to accent large areas, book cases and murals.  The recessed trims and housings should be evenly spaced 3 feet apart and 2 to 3 feet from the wall (depending on aperture size, explained later).  Specific wall washing trims should be used when performing this lighting function, (specified later) or a scalloped lighting effected will happen.

Recessed Wall washing is usually used in

  • Living Rooms (wash specific walls to make the room seem larger)
  • Great Rooms (wash a bookshelf or mural)
  • Offices (wash a wall that has important info on it)
  • Hallways (wash one or both walls for glare-free path lighting)

Grazing with Recessed Lighting

recessed grazing lightThe Grazing lighting function is when recessed lighting is used to accent specific architectural features such as stone walls, heavy textured finishes and creative vertical surfaces.  Recessed fixtures should be spaced 2 to 3 feet apart and 6 to 9 inches from the wall.

Grazing is usually used on

  • Fireplaces (to show the depth of the stone or brick)
  • Exterior eaves (to graze the exterior texture of the home)

Are you Recycling your Fluorescent Lamps?

Did you know that fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps and high intensity discharge (HID) lamps all contain mercury?

Yes, fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps and HID lamps are very efficient and are for the greater good of the Earth's future; they reduce energy consumption and save you money.  But, they must be recycled or disposed of professionally because they contain mercury.

In California all Fluorescent Lamps must be Recycled as of February 8th, 2006

On February 8th, 2006 a bill was passed that said all fluorescent lamps and tubes are considered hazardous waste in California when they are discarded because they contain mercury.  (Title 22, division 4.5, chapter 11, section 66261.50)

These lamps must be recycled and disposed of correctly

  • Fluorescent Tubes
  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) compact fluorescent lamp
  • High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamps

Every time a mercury containing lamp is disposed of in the regular trash and picked up for disposal, the lamps or tubes are broken and the mercury in them is released in to the environment.  These mercury vapors from the lamps can be absorbed through the lungs and bloodstream.  Mercury from broken lamps can also be washed into our rain water and eventually our public waterways.

The effects of mercury poisoning are felt in the nervous system, endocrine, kidneys and other vital organs.  Heavy exposure can lead to brain damage or ultimately death.

Effective July 12, 2005 New York began prohibiting mercury containing lamps from being discarded.

Where should you recycle your Mercury-Containing Lamps?

The recycling of mercury-containing lamps is not as popular as it should be.  Of the 670 million lamps discarded last year only 156 million are being recycled.  There are some places that you can bring your lamps to and you can find those locations from the State Lamp Recycling Regulations and Contacts.

If you do not live close enough to a Lamp Recycling facility then EasyPak can pick them up for you and show you exactly how to begin.

California's Incandescent Lamp Ban is now on Hold

Back in March I posted about California presenting Bill No. 722 to ban most incandescent medium screw based lamps by the year 2012, well that has been put on hold.  The bill was moved to the legislative inactive file by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine on June 7th.  This has raised the attention of many American Lighting Association members who are for the Energy Efficient lighting fixtures movement that has been prominent in California.

It seems that there was not enough support to carry the bill.  With lighting being roughly 20% of the nations energy consumption per year I would think that this would be an important concern especially in a state as large as California.

Solar Lighting Home Project is Getting Close to Completion

Grameen Surya Bijlee's (GSB) solar energy lighting project is getting closer to assisting approxamitly half a billion people in India.  In my original Solar Home Lighting post I spoke about some of the ways that this solar energy lighting project will help reduce energy consumption and help rural villages have more efficient sources of light.

What is this lighting project focused on?

The GSB is focused on the half a billion people (approx. 100 million households) in India who use 5 - 10 liters per month of kerosene for home lighting, which generates 15 - 30 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

The Govt. of India loses $15 billion per year in kerosene & LPG subsidy.  Almost 1.6 billion people in the world use kerosene. Reported by International Finance Corporation

What type of products will GSB offer?

Offering both off-grid solar (12V DC) and on-grid (220V/110V AC) LED lighting systems (solid-state lighting)

Off-grid system includes a solar panel based LED, - home lighting (2 LED lamps) & street lighting systems using 12V DC, sealed lead acid batteries with charge controllers

The complete off-grid system costs $US75 and $US280 respectively, (less than half the cost of comparative CFL lighting sytems in the market)

GSB has more than (off-grid solar) 6,000 installations in India & Nepal for home lighting, and 100 for street lighting

How are these lighting systems more efficient?

  • On-grid system is an equivalent LED bulb for the 220V AC grid system to replace incandescent & Compact Fluorescent Lamps to save on cost & power consumption
  • LED bulbs are efficient (7W, compared to 11W CFL's and 60W incandescent bulbs); & long lasting (20 years - 50,000 to 100,000 hours compared to 5,000-8,000 for CFL, & 1,000 hours for incandescent bulbs)
  • GSB is working closely with the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) to reduce the power consumption of LED bulbs, & also working on charge controllers to generate patents

What is GSB's marketing stratigy and how will they meet their goals?

  • GSB's marketing strategy is to work closely with the Govt of India (GOI), especially the MNRE (Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, previously MNES)  to obtain certification of our lighting system
  • Certification of GSB's product allows different departments, (especially rural, tribal, forest & power - development) of various states (30) in India to procure our systems for rural electrification
  • Simultaneously GSB will provide micro-credit for financing the systems in collaboration with SHGs (Self-Help Groups or Women's Co-operatives) & Micro-finance groups affiliated with NABARD, top ten Indian nationalised banks, NGOs, private foundations, NRIs and high net worth individuals
  • GSBs focus is on product development, and use distribution channels by leveraging the core competencies of our end-to-end supply chain partners as mentioned above
  • GSBs main concern is availability of cheap solar panels, LEDs and batteries; we are importing panels and LEDs but would prefer to have a domestic manufacturing base
  • GSB has identified solar panel partners in thin-film technologies as well as LEDs (Nichia, Japan) but would require government/private sector assistance to make this into a large-scale venture
  • Surya Bijlee is run by seasoned professionals with proven track records in their respective careers, and who are alumni of IIT Kharagpur, 1985 batch

GSBs final statement on Saving from using Solar Energy

In summary GSB has a proven product in the field, proven marketing & distribution model, huge market demand but needs seamless availability of affordable solar panels, LEDs and rechargeable batteries, and a pro-active approach from the Govt of India

GSB believes that India can replicate its success in IT (Information Technology) in the area of RE (Renewable Energy), and become the beacon for all developing countries looking for a solution to the current energy crisis

How Many Are Changing Their Incandescent Lamps to CFLs?

What It has been proven that lighting is responsible for the consumption of 22% of all of the electricity produced in the US.  The energy consumed by lighting can be drastically reduced by something as simple as changing out at least five highly used incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps.  This simple change will save you money and help the growing fight to save our Earth.

www.OneBillionBulbs.com  This energy savings calculator will help you determine how much money you can save when replacing incandescent lamps with compact fluorescent lamps.  The energy savings calculator will also help you see how much green house gas emissions are not added to our atmosphere because of the change you have made.

What are Greenhouse Gases?

Greenhouse Gases help sunlight enter our atmosphere freely.  When the sunlight hits the Earth’s surface, some of that light and heat is reflected back towards space. Greenhouse gases absorb this light and heat and trap it in the atmosphere.  The amount of energy sent from the sun to the Earth’s surface should be about the same as the amount of energy radiated back into space, leaving the temperature of the Earth’s surface roughly constant.

ozone layerThis is not the case when there are too many greenhouse gases present in the ozone layer.  An over abundance of these gases are causing the current "Greenhouse Effect" that is responsible for the warming trend being felt all over world.  The longer this trend continues the hotter our climate will get.  Hotter temps mean the melting of the polar ice caps which means the elevation of our oceans.  Yep say good bye to that beach side property in Florida.

Everyone has the ability to make a few simple lamp replacements and if almost every makes these changes than the world will be a cooler place.  And you can keep the beach front property.

Energy Savings with Outdoor Lighting

energy starMost residential homes have some sort of outdoor lighting fixtures around the exterior of their home.   Whether you are using decorative outdoor fixtures or industrial light fixtures for security you can still save energy by using Energy Star rated fixtures.  The main problem that consumers have with the Energy Star rated light fixtures are their inability to dim the light and the bluish glary light out put.  These myths have really become a thing of the past.

compact fluorescent lampCompact Fluorescent Lamps or CFLs are now being offered with dimmable ballasts and the CFLs of today are offered with warmer lumen output tones.  Either way when you are thinking about outdoor lighting dimming is usually not an issue nor is a bluish tone.  When choosing outdoor lighting Energy Star fixtures should be a must.

What Lighting Brands Make Outdoor Lighting Fixtures?

light concepts fixtureThere are more and more lighting manufactures jumping on the Energy Star rated lighting band wagon.  They are producing whole outdoor lighting series with wall mount fixtures, post mounts and chain hung all in the same family and finish.  Lithonia lighting has won the American Lighting Association Lighting for Tomorrow award on all three of their outdoor lighting fixture families.  Minka Lavery Outdoor lighting has twenty-three Energy Star rated outdoor lighting families that correlate with similar families that are in their indoor lighting line.

How Much Money Can I Save with Energy Star Outdoor Lighting?

Energy Star rated outdoor fixtures help reduce energy consumption which helps reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions that are readily destroying our Earth's Ozone layer.  The depletion of our Ozone layer has created a warming trend that will continue to melt polar ice caps that will raise ocean waters and eliminate beach side living.  As well as the ecological concerns you can save a good amount on your energy costs and on having to buy and re-lamp light bulbs.

minka-outdoor lightBelow is an example of how much you can save with Energy Star rated outdoor lighting fixtures.  For this example we will imagine two separate homes that are the same size.  One home will use the 9 non-Energy Star rated incandescent outdoor fixtures from the Minka-Outdoor Ardmore family and one home will use 9 Energy-Star rated CFL outdoor fixtures from the Minka Outdoor Ardmore lighting family

What is Organic Light Emitting Diode OLED

The US is the largest consumer of inefficient energy in the world.  We spend 250 to 270 billion dollars a year on the cost of that energy consumption and about 20% or 50 to 55 billion is consumed by our lighting.  Incandescent lamps are responsible for 45% of that energy consumption but only produce 14% of all the light produced by various light sources.  Research said by Optoelectronics Industry Development Association

organic light emitting diodeThe energy used by the US is just plain energy abuse.  We drive down the street when we can walk and our public transportation systems are not where they should be so we drive to work in a 5 passenger vehicle or SUV by our selves. Our main residential source of light the incandescent lamp is a little more efficient in heat production verses light as a candle.  This is why we are in need of alternate energy efficient lighting sources.  This brings us to the sister of the Light Emitting Diode the Organic Light Emitting Diode or OLED.

OLED and How it Works

Organic Light Emitting Diodes are thin layered 2-dimensional film sheets that emit light using very low voltage of 3 to 5 volts, kind of like thick layers of dense paper.  The OLED can be set to emit a color even white light with a high number in the color rendering index.  OLEDs can be manufactured to fit any shape or design and can be adhered to any solid substance like glass or metal.  This flexibility of design will definitely have a major impact on the lighting industry in years to come.

What are the Main Qualities of the OLED?

  • Environmentally Save and Energy Efficient
  • Inexpensive
  • Flexible in Design
  • Able to Emit any Color in the Spectrum
  • Long Life

What OLED designs Exist?

What is the Future of the Light Bulb and LEDs?

Since 1879 when Thomas Edison created the first incandescent bulb, our main light source has been that pear shape medium based incandescent appliance bulb.  This inefficient bulb will soon be banned in countries around the world.  California and Canada will ban the sale of incandescent bulbs by 2012.  Australia will have them banned by 2010.  These governments understand that incandescent bulbs are five times less efficient than compact fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are up to five times more efficient than compact fluorescents.

Why Get Rid of the Incandescent Light Bulb?

Lighting in all forms consumes over 20% of the electricity produced in the United States according to the US Department of Energy.  If the majority of the US began to switch to the LED source for their main light out put it could cut energy costs in half by 2027.  This energy savings is equivalent to the use of 500 million barrels of our ever so precious oil.  This would drastically reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases that are creating the warming trend known as global warming

Light bulb life comparison:

  • Incandescent bulbs - 1000hrs
  • Compact Fluorescent Lamps - 10,000hrs
  • Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) - 50,000hrs

Are we Ready to Make the Switch to LEDs?

The LED technology is still rapidly progressing as the costs are dropping.  Over the last two years the LEDs have doubled in energy efficiency and brightness according to the leading LED manufacture Cree, Inc.  There is some time before the LED will produce a light that will resemble the yellowish tone like the warm and comfortable incandescent lamp.  The costs of LEDs are still to high for the average consumer.  A 5.8 watt LED medium based bulb is $50.00 which is equal to a 25watt incandescent bulb that can be purchased for under a dollar at your local super market.

The commercial industry has already taken to the LED savings, in Portland, Oregon they replaced over 90% of all their traffic lights.  In 2001, this Energy Savings Project cost Portland 2.2 million dollars and had an annual energy and maintenance savings of $ 400,000.00 this would have a net payback with in less than 3 years.  As well as there cost savings Portland has reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced accident liability from burnt out lamps and reduced added waste from burnt out lamps in their landfill areas.

How will Compact Fluorescent Lamps fit in to the Energy Wise Trend?

I believe the light source of choice over next 3 to 7 years will be compact fluorescent lamps.  Compact fluorescent lamps are about at the right price and the color tones of the light emitted is getting very close to that of the incandescent replacement.  There is currently a variety or decorative light fixtures for residential applications and the energy savings is currently five times that of incandescent.  CFLs are definitely a step in the right direction.  What changes can you make now to increase energy efficiency in the lighting in your home?

Energy Star Offers an Advanced Lighting Package

Across the United States, energy efficiency lighting programs provide resources for retailers, builders, and consumers who are interested in making energy-efficient building choices. These programs are administered by a wide array of organizations that must adhere to the government’s energy star lighting program.

Energy Star Lighting Rules

Some rules to these criteria that pertain to lighting industry are:

  • Lighting fixtures must offer the same or more light while using two thirds less energy than incandescent fixtures.
  • They must last at least 10,000 hours or about 7 years without changing the light bulb.
  • They must make bulb replacements that plug in rather than that screw in so that people cannot put incandescent bulbs back in the fixture.

Based on the information above, we recommends replacing the five most frequently used light fixtures in your home with energy star qualified lighting.  By simply doing this, you can save an average of $60.00 on electricity costs. (This depends on electricity rates and usage). This number is also based on today’s energy costs, which we all know have a tendency to rise.

Energy star qualified lighting fixtures are still relatively new and are becoming increasingly available. For a list of manufactures that supply these fixtures please visit the energy star
Web site at www.energystar.gov

What exactly is the Advanced Lighting Package?

The energy star advanced lighting package (ALP) is a whole home lighting package that features energy star qualified criteria’s.

They are as follows:

High use rooms such as the kitchen, dining room, living room, family room should have at least 50% of these lighting fixtures energy star rated.

Medium / Low-Use rooms such as a bedroom, Den, Office Basement , Laundry room,
Garage Closet and all other rooms should have at least 25% of their total light fixtures energy star rated.

Outdoor lights affixed to the home or free standing pole should have at least 50% of
The lighting energy star rated.

To meet this criteria all ceiling fans must be energy star rated as well.

Builders who have met this criteria are eligible to use the energy star brand for marketing and promoting their homes as having the energy star. This helps potential buyers identify added value through energy-bill savings.

What Makes Up an Energy Star Light Fixture or Ceiling Fan?

Many lighting and ceiling fan manufactures are beginning to understand the growing concern for reducing the use of non-renewable energy consumption.  Non-renewable energy sources are coal, oil and natural gases.  These sources are becoming more expensive, they will soon run out of supply and the conversion from the raw product to energy is harmful to the earth.

energy star ratedEnergy Star products are the answer to reducing the use of these non-renewable sources that are becoming more and more harmful to the preservation of our Earth.  There is an Energy Star residential light fixture program that has this nationally recognized label that you should look for when purchasing energy efficient lighting.  Lighting fixtures that have earned this Energy Star Label combine high performance, quality, attractive design, and the highest levels of energy efficiency, so they save money on utility bills, and help protect the environment.

How Light Fixtures Qualify as an Energy Star rated Product?

  • These light fixtures offer the same or more light while using 2/3 less energy than a similar incandescent fixture.
  • They must include a pin-based Compact Fluorescent Lamp that can not be replaced with an incandescent lamp.  These CFL's must offer light for at least 10,000 hours, or about 7 years before relamping.
  • The lighting families should come in hard-wired and portable lamp models, including a variety of desk and table lamps, torchieres, chandeliers, bath vanity fixtures, flush mount light fixtures, and outdoor fixtures.
  • These light fixtures provide a safe, cool alternative to incandescent and halogen fixtures.

What Light Fixtures to use High End Showcase Home

Kitchen lightingBeautiful lighting fixtures are becoming more of a priority in the high end custom home industry.  Olsen Custom Homes hired our lighting design team to help select and place all of their lighting fixtures and ceiling fans in their premier showcase home.  These custom built showcase homes are what high end custom builders use to show off their best work.  We have taken pictures of every room in this home so we can share it with you. The pictures are compliments of the talented graphic designer Dale Roberts

Use Many Types of Kitchen Lighting Fixtures to Create the Perfect Light

Kitchen lightingThis is another picture of the Kitchen Lighting showing all of the different types of light sources we used.  We used recessed lighting to create an easy to control general lighting.  The decorative island pendant is part of a pen shell series by Metropolitan with matching bar pendants to match.  The xenon under cabinet lights are used to off set the shadowing from the light above when performing tasks on the counter top.

Family Room Lighting done Right

Family room lightingIn the showcase family room we used four different types of light sources to complete the well lit atmosphere.  The Adare ceiling fan by Minka Aire Fans has the same pen shell glass used on the decorative light fixtures in the kitchen lighting.  This ceiling fan comes with dimmable up lighting and down lighting to help create different moods.  We used recessed fixtures in the elaborate tray ceiling and in the inset walls by the fire place.  This combination of all dimmable lighting will give you complete control of the mood in this room.

What Type of Lighting for the Theater?

theater lightingThe wall mounted sconces are of the same pen shell series that were used in the kitchen and family room.  The sconces create the perfect home theater mood when dimmed while watching a good movie.  We used recessed lighting as the main dimmable ambient lighting source.  Step lighting was used so that you can have floor lighting during the movie with out obstructing the integrity of the movie.

Wine Cellar Lighting

wine cellar lightingMost wine cellars tend to be in smaller darker rooms that are climate controlled.  We used a Metropolitan pen shell series pendant with a matching wall sconce.  Both the pendant lighting and the wall sconce lighting are dimmable so you can create the intimate wine cellar mood.

How to Complete Your Master Bathroom Lighting

bathroom lightingBathroom lighting is one of the most important rooms to light right in your home to assure that women look beautiful and men shave all the hairs necessary.  We used a mini chandelier over the tub from the Minka-Lavery Jessica McClintock lighting series and the matching vanity lights on the mirrors.  The Vanity lights use four 100watt bulbs creating enough light to perform any type of grooming.  We also used recessed lighting and a table lamp for general ambient light.

Master Bedroom Lighting

In the master bedroom we added the Salon Grand ceiling fan with medallion that matched the master bathroom mini chandelier and vanity lights.  Again the recessed lighting was used for general ambient light.  The bedside table lamps are great for reading controllable from either side of the bed.

How to Light the Dining Area without Glare?

The main problem with dining room lighting is to much glare from a single chandelier.  To solve this problem we use recessed fixtures in the side mantel and wall sconces in the same pen shell series that we used for the chandelier. All of these light sources would be dimmable to create an intimate dining mood.

How to Prevent Salt Corrosion from Destroying Outdoor Light Fixtures

If you live with in three miles of a brackish or salt water body of water than you know what happens to outdoor products of any kind.  Living in coastal Florida areas will teach you this valuable lesson.  Outdoor light fixtures take a beating when installed in these areas that is why it is important do find the right light fixtures for the right areas.

What Outdoor Light Fixtures are Made of?

Outdoor light fixtures are made up of different materials and different qualities of those materials.

Below are five examples of the main materials used in outdoor lighting fixtures.

  • Spun Aluminum casts were the aluminum is made of recycled auto transmissions this cast usually has reminisces of lubricants in the cast.  These impurities in the aluminum cast make the fixture break down faster especially if in coastal areas.  Usually found in cheaper outdoor light fixtures.  Life expectancy is 4 months to 1 year.
  • True Aluminum casts are made with raw aluminum with no supplemental materials in the cast.  This is still not the best product for coastal areas but it will last longer than spun aluminum casts especially when there is an added textural powder coat finish added.  Life expectancy of non-textured is 1.5 years to 3 years.  Heavy-textured or marine coated is 3.5 years to 7 years.
  • Solid Brass outdoor light fixtures stand up well to salt corrosive environments.  The raw solid brass material will patina with age but must be rinsed to control salt build up.  The solid brass outdoor fixtures can come in different finishes like bronze and brushed nickel made by creating a chemical reaction.  Life expectancy is 4 years to 7 years.
  • Solid Copper outdoor fixtures are made of raw copper and will last in salt corrosive environments.  Solid copper light fixtures patina very well with age, better than any of the other affordable raw materials.  These outdoor fixtures should still be rinsed frequently.   Beware of the copper plated aluminum outdoor fixtures they will not last.  Life expectancy is 5 years to 10 years.
  • Ceramic outdoor fixtures are truly the best outdoor light fixture available.  Ceramic light fixtures do not rust or patina even in salt corrosive environments.  The quality of the kiln fired glaze or painted finish will be dependent on the life of the exterior of the product.  Usually the rivets on the internal parts will disintegrate before the paint flakes.  Life expectancy is 8 years to 15 years.

Outdoor Light Fixture Maintenance

All outdoor light fixtures need to be maintained and cleaned to preserve the life of the product.  Imaging if you never washed your car how it would look in two years especially if you lived beachside.  If you plan on installing outdoor light fixtures in a salt corrosive area then you want to make sure you can rinse the fixture with fresh water at least once a month.  Rinsing the light fixture will remove salt build up, if you can not rinse the fixture use a damp cloth to remove excess salt build up.

Another main concern with outdoor fixtures is bird droppings.  Bird droppings contain an acidic component that will break down the paint finish if not rinsed off with fresh water.

Aged Outdoor Light Fixtures in Eleuthera, Bahamas

True Aluminum outdoor light fixture with no texture added after 6 months on the ocean in the Bahamas

True Aluminum outdoor light fixture with a textured finish after one and a half years on the saltwater inter coastal water way

Ceramic outdoor light fixture after one year on the ocean in the Bahamas

As you can see the winner is the ceramic and the textured aluminum outdoor light fixtures.  I wish I had some aged solid brass and solid copper fixtures to show but this will have to do for now.

Why Dark Sky Products Help Find Killer Asteroids

We all should know that asteroids are continually traveling through space usually at a rate of twice the speed of a bullet with no certain destination.  In the recent past small asteriods have had direct impact with the earth and larger astriods have had near misses.  These asteriods are from the size of a pebble to the size of 18 miles in diameter or larger.  These asteriods also have different types of density some are hard (identified with their fast rotation speed) and some are porous (identified by their slow rotation speed).

Being able to see and identify these astriods is imperative to understanding how to destroy them if the Earth is in their direct path.  Mainly because a direct hit by a large asteriod could devastate our planet as we know it.  This is where the International Dark-Sky Association efforts have a great impact on future asteriod threats to our society.

Why Reduce Light Pollution?

This is only one of the reasons why reducing our Light Pollution is so important.  Light Pollution makes it more difficult to for NASA scientists to view these asteriods with their powerful telescopes.  A sky clear not needed lighting would allow NASA to view the density of these asteriods.

Tests have proven that hard asteriods can be destroyed by a direct hit with the appropriate missile but the more porous asteriods would absorb the blow and continue its path possibly the Earth.  Light Pollution affects us more than we know.

How Can You Help Reduce Your Light Pollution?

Lighting manufactures are continually making Dark-Sky rated lighting products to reduce Light Pollution.  One of the most Dark-Sky and Energy Star conscious lighting manufactures is the Minka Group Lighting FamilyMinka Outdoor Lighting has three Dark Sky compliant families of lighting.

These lighting fixtures can easily replace existing exterior fixtures in minutes to help reduce the over abundance of light pollution.  Every little bit we can do to help ensures a better world for our children and our children's children.

How to Make the Lighting in your Home More Energy Efficient

Money is tight now and our earth's ecosystem is suffering because of the way humans have abused our energy sources.  This problem has grown out of control and we are already starting to see the effects it is having in the most north and south regions of the world.  The over use of our current energy sources are polluting our atmosphere and are creating a warming trend that will soon devastate the coastal areas that many people live in.  I believe that there is still something that we as individuals can do.

Why Should we be Concerned About Light Energy Consumption?

We use lighting every day and every night whether you are from the North Pole, Asia, America or anywhere else in the world, light in all forms is used for many reasons.  People use light for safety, ambiance, performing tasks, driving at night, late night construction, looking in a drain pipe for that lost piece of jewelry or countless other things.  Light sources come in many different forms from the kerosene lanterns used in rural villages in India to the high powered high pressure sodium highway street lights in Orlando, Florida

Anyway we look at it, luminous light output is an energy source that we have the ability to control with simple changes.  These simple changes start with one person and take very little effort at all.  Take this educated statistic in for example:

If every American home changed out just five high-use light fixtures or the bulbs in them with ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR Rating, each family would save about $60 every year in energy costs, and together we’d save about $6.5 billion each year in energy costs and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from more than 8 million cars. Said by Energy Star

This has to start with us as an individual.

Energy Star Light Technology is Changing

Years ago fluorescent lighting was thought of as that draining office light that took all the energy out of you.  The problem is that the light sources were so efficient that that theory lasted as long as the lamps did.  Most of these older fluorescent energy efficient lamps have a higher Kelvin temperature in the high 4000Ks resulting in a blue toned, harsh and bright light output.  Most incandescent (most inefficient light source outside of fire) lamps have a warmer 2500K to 2800K producing a more intimate light output.

Below is Kelvin temperature description:

  • 1800K - Very warm - Candle or a clear sunset
  • 2700K - Warm - Average incandescent lamp
  • 3500K - Reddish white - Theatrical Lighting
  • 4100K - Cool - Most fluorescent lamps
  • 5000K - Very Cool - Clear Summer day light
  • 7500K - Icy Blue white - Standing on one of our melting glaciers

Today fluorescent lamp technology is readily available in warmer tones matching the intimate incandescent light output color.  As well fluorescent lamps are available with dimmable ballasts that allow the user to reduce and intensify the light output.

What Lighting Changes can You make?

By making a simple plan and a few simple lighting fixture changes you can help.

Let me first give examples of different types of light sources which are also called lamps or bulbs.  Annual energy cost is calculated at $.08 per kilowatt-hour.

  • medium base lampIncandescent light source - average life is about 500 to 1500 hours or 6 months to a year - this is the least efficient light source other than fire.  A 75watt lamp running for 2000 hours in a year would have an annual energy cost of about $ 18.00 and you would have already had to change the lamp.  Low initial cost.
  • halogen lampHalogen light source - average life is about 2000 to 5000 hours or 2 to 3 years - Halogen lamps are about 10-15% more energy efficient than incandescent light sources.  Medium to high initial cost.
  • compact fluorescent lampFluorescent or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) – average life is about 6000 to 10000 hours or about 3.5 to 7 years.  Energy Star rated light fixtures and sources must last up to 10000 hours or 7 years. Fluorescent light sources are up to five times more energy efficient than incandescent. Medium to high initial cost.

The steps below will show you how a few simple changes can increase the energy efficiency in your home.

First, identify the parts of your home where you use the most light.  Typically the most light is used in the laundry room, kitchen and bathroom.  Closets, home offices and breakfast areas use a lot of light but usually not for long periods of time.

Second, make a list of the different types of light sources used and then the different types of sockets in the areas of the most light used. The two main types of incandescent lamp sockets are medium base and candelabra base.

Third, if you do not want to change the existing light fixtures in these areas then most of the time you can just change out the regular incandescent lamps to a more energy efficient lamp (fluorescent or halogen lamp).  And or you can combine energy efficient light sources with dimmable light sources.

Light dimming is also an easy way to extend incandescent lamp life and increase energy efficiency. By extending the lamp life you reduce the amount of times you need to replace the lamp. This reduces the labor involved in relamping and also reduces the materials used to manufacture new lamps.

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are available with medium based sockets and candelabra based sockets. CFLs come in 3-way (low, medium and high light levels), dimmable and standard models. These CFLs are also now available in the 2700-3000 Kelvin temperatures to match the intimate color out put of the incandescent light sources. The cost of CFLs range from $ 6-14.00 and you can even purchase them at your local supermarket.

These small changes in your home can make major impacts on our Earth’s future.

2007 National-Dark Sky Week Celebration

Light pollution is a continuing problem around the world, as populations continue to grow, so does every night light pollution.  The glow from outdoor lights take that prescious view of our stars away from astronomers and romantics.  This over glow of outdoor light wastes energy, changes the natural cycle of nocturnal animals and has the potential to cause health problems.

This event was founded in 2003 by Jennifer Barlow and this is the fifth annual National Dark-Sky Week that is taking place right now April 17-24.  Also endorsed by the International Dark-Sky Assosiation, American Astronomical Society, and the Astronomical League.  The National Dark-Sky Week wants to reduce light pollution by educating our population of better outdoor lighting practices.

Jennifer Barlow observes that "National Dark-Sky Week is a great opportunity to dust off the old telescope from the attic and share in the wonder of the universe that has been part of the human tradition for thousands of years."

What Problems Happened on a Contemporary Lighting Install

This is phase three of a contemporary lighting design and install in a beach front condo in Palm Coast, Florida.  This condo is being soon to be lit by the finest contemporary lighting available.  We have used three Tech Lighting low voltage monorail track systems, three Eurofase contemporary fixtures, two Italamp vanity fixtures, three Terzani light fixtures, twenty-two 3" clear diffuser trims, lutron controls, a Minka-Aire fan and a Modern Fan Company fan.  We have experienced a number of problems on this job but as it is being finished it is looking spectacular.

Tech Lighting Monorail Track System Turned out Great!

Tech lighting track systemThe three Tech Lighting track systems turned out awesome after we worked through a standoff size problem.  On one of the track systems we were not able to mount the transformer flush to the ceiling because we were not able to chip out a space for the mounting T-Bar in the concrete slab.  Our solution was to cut longer stems for the standoff anchors.  This problem was solved fairly quickly and the low voltage track system ended up turning out awesome.

The Eurofase Lighting Fixtures had some small Issues

Eurofase ether fixtureThe Eurofase Ether fixture is a beautiful lighting fixture truly one of the most creative contemporary lighting fixtures I have seen.  The Ether fixture did not come with an instruction manual or bulbs so the installation process was a real treat.  I purchased the bulbs from a local distributor but have had problems securing them into the fixture.  I believe it to be the bulb manufacture because some times different manufacture make the same product slightly different.  Even though the bulbs are not right the fixture still looks great.

 The Foyer Lighting Fixture Exchange

Eurofase Folie fixtureThe Eurofase Folie fixture turned out great with no issues except for the missing instruction manual.  Originally the Folie fixture was hung in the foyer but it seemed to be taking away from the fixture due to the recessed tray ceiling.  So, we put it in the office where the ceiling was naked allowing the full appreciation of this highly structural light fixture.

Tech lighting aria ceiling fixtureThe foyer replacement fixture was the Tech Lighting Aria ceiling.  This worked out perfect because the Aria has bendable arms that allowed us to make up for the off centered junction box with in the deep tray ceiling.

Lighting that was Heating up the Kitchen

eurofase metafisica fixtureThe Eurofase Metafisica lighting Fixture complimented the kitchen space perfectly.  They had a recessed tray ceiling in the shape of a off centered pentagon.  This made the fixture selection tough but it worked out in the end.  We also changed out the recessed trims that had incandescent R20 bulbs and a boring white baffle to a Halogen PAR bulb and brushed aluminum trim.  This made a bright difference.

The Terzani Dining Room Fixtures

terazani adele fixtureThe Terzani Adele suspension fixture for over the dining table is gorgeous but we could not hang it this $ 1,800.00 fixture was poorly packaged and one of the bulb sockets was crushed.  The light fixture has gone back for repair.  We did hang the Adele wall sconces and their shape, quality and design fit the space perfectly.

broken adele fixtureThere will be a final phase 4 of this lighting fixture installation and I will share the final images as soon as I get them.

Lighting Memories of a Wonderful Man

It is happy to meet people who enjoy the simplicity in love and life that is what I think of these two special customers.  Recently we installed a Tech Lighting Two-Circuit Monorail Track System for a couple living in a beachside condo on the ocean.  Les and Marcia came into our showroom about 18 months ago inquiring about a monorail system.  They were excited to know all of their options and how they might add a little more color and creativity to their eclectic ocean front space.  We began the search to find the perfect pendants and layout design for them.

Some Customers Give Us More Than We Give Them

Les and Marcia

We were the first people to have track lighting (the old type) in Orlando in 1980 affixed to huge cypress beams in our condo there.  Hughes Supply ordered them from NY for us; then no one knew how to install them.  (We were also the first people to have louver drapes in 1971, also ordered from NY) says Marcia.

                                                                                                                           Les and Marcia

Les and Marcia first went to Stacey Lipton Interiors and she referred them to Del Mar Designs for there low voltage track system design.  This was soon after purchasing their new ocean view in Daytona Beach, Florida.  It was a delight to begin working with the charismatic Marcia and the crumpled and smiling Les, the duo brought a smile to me at every meeting.  The pendant they were first drawn to was the Tech Lighting Gem this pendant has a number of different colored glass pieces embedded in its design.  This matched there eclectic collections of orange juicers and vintage Tonka Trucks.

The Tech Lighting Design Takes Place

Les and Marcia began trying to figure out how they could layout their track system to compliment their space with out obstructing their view.  For these Low Voltage track systems Del Mar Designs always sends a lighting designer out to review the space.

What a fun space we had to work with, it was so colorful and full of life, you could tell this couple had been collecting items all over for this place for decades.  Says Colby Harris Del Mar Designs Lighting Designer.

They originally started out with a "U" shaped design, then they revised it to an "H" shaped design, finally they all agreed that a wavy shape through out the living space would be the best.  This wavy shape complimented the ocean and cabinet handles, contrasted the square shaped room and was able to add functional lighting were they needed it.  With the design confirmed Del Mar Designs began the order process.  Everyone seemed happy and excited to get the job started.

The Tech Lighting Install Begins

tech lighting two circuit track systemDel Mar's Lighting Designer and installer went out to the site one calm Saturday Morning with a drawing, tools and all of the parts and pieces for the job.  The installation began smoothly with no problems at all.  This was a little out of the ordinary because this wavy shape took place over different floor surface heights.  Usually when laying out a track it is done by laying the track out on the floor and laser plumb bobbing where the anchors will go in the ceiling.  We could not do it this way because the system traveled over a fixed sitting bench.  So, we had to take educated guesses on where the anchors would go.  This usually leads to mistakes but, the job went very smooth you could tell we were in a place of good karma.

Lighting the Memories of a Great Man

low voltage track systemBefore leaving that Saturday afternoon Les and Marcia were trying to decide which other pendants would fit the space other than the Blue Gem and the Crystal Bedazzled that were hanging.  The last thing that Les and Marcia talked about that night was getting the White Gem Pendant to add to their lighting system.

The following day Marcia experienced great heartache when realizing that Les had passed in his sleep.  It is so sad to see the most important people in our lives pass on to their new place in the world of life and I am sure that Les was needed in a place that we do not yet understand.  He smiled, laughed and always had something nice to say.  These two friends touched me as only a few people have.  I will never forget how we were given the chance to meet Les and experience his humble happy idea of life before his passing.

This was written in his memory

the given power of our freedom
all about every moments choice
opening her door we are a gift
light the day to bring us were we are
choose our decisions for consequence
consume what makes us see for ourselves
drive right on the road to success
listen who guides us right on that road
feel answers of truth in every moment
every touched hand allows us to breathe
create destiny for one who knows none
let God guide the path of our naked mind
pain is chosen by the one who does not choose
nothing is made without honest life
my life creates yours in the same soil
let our earth be our guiding light

Les and the kid

                              Les and the Kid

All the memories of Les have been joyous and free.

I am sure his seed of life was as happy as it could be.

This post is in the loving memory of a man and a woman that became a friend.

Casablanca, Tech Lighting & Leucos Install

We have a new lighting design and install to share with you.  This install was the whole 11th floor of a condo right on the beach in Ormond Beach, Florida.  It was very hard to focus while looking at the surf for many afternoons.  Our customers renovated this floor and we were the last sub contractor to arrive at the job.

We came in as the second lighting designer, they were not happy with the first one.  This is how it began.

Lighting the Living Area Using a far away Electrical Box

This has proven to be one of our remodel specialties.  We have a lot of customers that purchase an older condo that has very limited electrical boxes in the ceiling.  Tech Lighting low voltage Monorail track systems tend to be the best solution for this problem.

This is the only electric box in the living area old lightingYes this existing fixture was hot.

We removed this fixture and deposited it directly into the trash shoot, I dont think they will miss it.  Then we mounted a 300watt transformer on the electric box and ran 22 feet of low voltage monorail track in a question mark design.  (this was the first design)new lighting  This design helped us bring light to all areas of the living area.  On either side of the couch we used the upside down table lamp design, this is done by suspending a mini pendant where there would normally be a table with a lamp.  This frees up a lot of space and looks hot.  We also sprinkled accent spot lights along the track.

Displaying Art with Limited Lighting Resources

Our next task was to flood a number of walls with light when the closest power source was in a closet near by.  tech lighting wall rail

This was a challenge but we made it work.  We used two six foot Tech Lighting wall rails with 150watt remote transformers located in the near by closets.  The wall rails turned out great as you can see.

We had to light a similar wall situation in their southern hall way using Tech Lighting Power Jack canopies, Om heads and halogen PAR20 lamps.  after tech lighting This phase of the job was quite trying because of the existing air conditioning duct that ran the length of the hall way.  That left us with only a couple inches of plenum in certain spots.  We used half inch pancake junction boxes to mount the fixtures in.  The duct also made it difficult to create an even light spacing through out the hall.  In the end we accomplished this phase and it turned out with adjustable accent lighting with a clean balance.

Murano Mini Pendants Over the Dining Room Table

Our customers wanted three Tech Lighting Murano Firebird Owl pendants for over there dining room table.  Their electrical box was two feet off from the center of the table.  This little obsticle made us come up with a swirl design so we could still balance pendants through the center of the table.  The Firebird Owl pendants turned out great tech lighting owl pendants  We hand bent the design by using template that was shaped into a circle and cut out of a 3/4 inch piece of plywood.

We Could Not Leave Out the Casablanca Ceiling Fan

Our customers fell in love with the Casablanca Stealth fan in brushed nickel, teak blades and the inteli-touch wall control.  We installed two of these fans one in the television area and one in their office.  casablanca stealth fan

This condo turned out to be another successful lighting design and install.

Solar Home Lighting & Solar Street Lighting Using LEDs

Solar based lighting is becoming more in demand and more affordable.  Combined with new LED Light-Emitting Diode technologies solar lighting could be a major help in rural areas across the globe.  GSBF has begun a lighting project that is a 12V DC based solar LED lighting system ($55) for rural & urban homes which use kerosene fuel for home lighting.  LED bulbs have also been designed for homes connected to the 220V AC grid who face power cuts of 5-10 hours each day.  These systems could use rechargeable batteries to store energy when the power is on.  These systems are being marketed mainly in the rural areas of India.

India's Govenment is in Support of this Solar Lighting Project

MNES (Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Govt. of India) have included the creators of these solar systems in the panel to finalize the technical requirements for both solar home lighting and solar street lighting systems using LEDs.  These systems should create safer streets and better lit homes, churches and schools in these rural areas of the world.

How these Solar Lighting Systems Originated?

Grameen Surya Bijlee Foundation (GSBF) started off as a non-profit organization to provide free solar home lighting systems to the destitute population who use kerosene for home lighting.  They realized later that it is better to sell them the solar lighting system at a affordable price which implies that instead of paying for kerosene monthly they could pay for the solar system on a monthly installment basis in a 24 to 36 month time frame using micro-loans.  It is the fish and fishing rod analogy, it is healthier to let the end-users or households gain responsibility of ownership.  Anything free is abused by these types of general populations.

solar panelsTheir now current model is a for-profit model (social entrepreneurship) business, but they believe that with GSBF (their original company) could offer free solar lighting systems to neutral environments such as village schools, community centres, charitable hospitals, places of worship etc. to bring awareness of these energy savings and increased access to light.  This would accelerate the adoption of the system by individual households using micro-finance, in a shorter time frame.

Their original company GSBF will be not-for-profit but the new company "DIGITAL SOLAR LIGHTING" is a for-profit enterprise, and they are very keen on setting up a solar panel plant to cater to both the rural & urban demand for these solar lighting systems.   The for-profit model allows investors to participate in two ways, not only to earn a rate of return on their investment, but also to contribute to social upliftment.

How Much will the Solar Lighting Systems Cost?

solar street lightsDigital Solar Lighting is importing single-junction amorphous light panels from China at $2 per watt but would prefer to have an in-house thin-film manufacturing company, and to have a better quality product.  The market for their solar home LED lighting system at $50 is at least $10 billion within India.  The market for the solar street LED lighting at $200 for 600,000 villages with 10 street lights per village is $1.2 billion.  At this time they have not included commercial and other high-end applications using solar.  One could extrapolate this to other developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin-America.  India is a very price-conscious country and affordability is a very key selling point to have a large-scale operation.  They are also looking at carbon emission credits to reduce the cost of the system.

Any Help is Needed to Produce Solar Lighting Systems

In summary there is a commercial upside for a technology provider to partner with Digital Solar Lighting and make solar lighting the main-stream electricity provider to the advantaged and disadvantaged population of developing countries.  They are studying various possibilities for sourcing thin-film panels at less that $1 per watt manufacturing cost or maybe even set up a state-of-the-art thin-film solar panel manufacturing unit in India.  A company such as NanoSolar would be an interesting partner to reach our objectives.  Alternatively donations from foundations or companies' CSR divisions would go into implementing solar lighting systems to neutral environments as described above.

Are Compact Fluorescent Lamps Dimmable?

Energy efficient or Energy Star Rated lighting are becoming more and more popular.  The main problem I have run into with people wanting to convert there light sources to a more energy efficient source is that they think compact fluorescent lamps are not dimmable.  Fluorescent lamps are dimmable with a special dimming ballast and fluorescent dimming control.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) are Dimmable

Dimmable ballasts have been available for fluorescent tubes for years it is only recently that dimmable fluorescent ballasts have become available for CFLs.  These dimmable CFLs make it very easy for anyone to save energy with there existing lightingSylvania makes a dimmable CFL that can retro fit almost any application.  Minka-Lavery Outdoor just came out with a full Energy Star and Dark Sky rated outdoor lighting line.

The following are dimmable CFLs and what type of incandescent lamp they would replace.

  • Mini Spiral or standard spiral CFL replaces the standard appliance A bulb
  • R30 & R40 CFL replace the R30 & R40 incandescent reflectors

What are the savings to make my lighting more efficient?

The R30 dimmable CFL can retrofit into most 6" aperature recessed downlight fixtures providing dimmable light at at least a 40% energy savings.  The intial cost of the CFL is usually $ 14 to $ 19 dollars compared to $ 1.50 to $ 3.00 for the incandescent lamp.  The energy consumption of this one CFL should be about 124.8 kWh/yr at an average cost of .07 cents per kWh that is about $ 8.74 a year.  The Incandescent costs about $ 13.00 per year to run.  The CFL has an average lamp life of 10,000 hours while the incandescent lamp only has 1,000 to 2,000 hours.

With in two years you will have saved a few dollars in energy costs,  will still not have to drive up to the store to buy bulbs or change the lamp for another two years.  Using CFLs also create less of a need for the manufacturing of lamps reducing the cunsomption of raw materials used to create the lamps.

A great article to read in more detail is dimmable compact fluorescent fact sheet by Washington State University.

An Easy Way to Upgrade Light in Recessed Fixtures

Most homes with in the last ten years included a lighting package with a number of recessed lighting cans sprinkled through out the home.  These recessed fixtures are usually a 6" aperature (the measurment of the opening) with a plain white baffle trim.  The homes built before ten years ago typically came with a black inside baffle until people realized that the black was absorbing more light than it was reflecting.  All most all of these recessed fixtures used an incandescent light source 65watt BR30 medium base lamp.

Change the Trim it came with

Many standard 6" recessed fixtures have the same type of trim set so different companies have compatible trims.  If you have a black baffle trim and you want the current light source to be more efficient then a Standard Open Trim in the Clear Diffuse interior finish will do the trick.  This will reflect the light better so you are seeing more light rather than the light being absorbed in the black trim.

Clear Diffuse Trim

What type of Light Source is more Efficient?

As we age our eyesight weakens, by the time most of us are in our 50's our eyesight should be 50% as clear as when we were in our 20's. Knowing this the quality of light becomes more important as the years pass.  The standard incandescent BR30 lamp tends to have a yellow tint to the light it produces which makes it harder to see exact lines and colors.

Halogen Lamps are a much more efficient source of light, producing a crisp white light.  The bulbs recommended for the upgrade would be 75watt PAR Lamp halogen lamp.  These bulbs have upto a 40% longer life reducing the labor involved in changing bulbs and the waste involved in manufacturing them.

What Light Sources are more Efficient than Halogen?

Energy Star rated lamps are more efficient than halogen.  Today there are many Energy Star rated compact fluorescent lamps that can fit in to the standard medium based socket that is in a 6" recessed fixture.

The compact fluorescents or CFL come in a few different styles and color temperatures

  • Mini Spiral - 2700K, 3000K & 5000K color temps
  • Standard Spiral - 3000K & 5000K color temps
  • R20, R30, BR38 & R40 Reflectors - 3000K & 5000K color temps
  • A Type - 3000K color temp
  • Candelabra Base - 3000K
  • Bullet & Globe Style - 3000K & 5000K

The comparable CFL to the incandescent BR30 is the R30 CFL lasting 6000 hours, producing almost the same lumens and 75% less energy usage.  Lumens equals the quantity of light energy produced by a light source. The CFL lamps usually cost anywhere from $8 to $ 14.  With the energy savings, time saved driving to the store to buy lamps, changing the lamp and lumen output is almost the same.

Sounds light a no brainer to me.

Reduce Light Pollution & Save Our Stars

Most people do not think about the stars when they are putting together a lighting package for their home.  As time passes and more homes are built, more lights are added to those homes and more light is added to the sky.  All of this light pollution takes stars from our skys every day.  If you have ever flown in an airplane you have seen how our home lights leak into the sky.

What is being done to police lighting pollution?

Not enough!  There are organizations world wide that play a big part in trying to control the growing rate of light abuse in our night skies.  So many people are unaware of light pollution and how it effects insects, animals and our own eyes wishing to see the beauty of the stars.  These effects go deeper than just our needs now but to the creatures and children of the future.

The International Dark-Sky Association and how they help

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is an organization that has lead the fight against energy waste and light pollution since 1988.  The IDA is based out of Arizona the home of the Grand Canyon land in its most beautiful form.  There main focus is to inform and educate members and the public of the following effects.

  • Light pollution on dark skies
  • Air and water pollution from energy waste
  • Harm to human health
  • Harm to nocturnal wildlife
  • Less safety and security
  • Less nighttime visibility
  • Less starry nights
  • Raise awareness of light pollution
  • Raise awareness of these issues
  • Educate the values of efficient outdoor lighting
  • Help stop other threats such as radio frequency interference and space debris

They are also a portal to all the other similar organizations around the world, light pollution forums, outdoor lighting installation guides, lighting issues and lighting laws.  All these links are found on the IDA resources page.

You can participate in IDA's rating lighting installations program.  This program allows the IDA to gather information about how the average person is educated on light pollution.  This is an easy 3 to 5 minute exercise that will assist the IDA with there fight against light pollution.

What type of light fixtures are Dark-Sky approved?

Dark-Sky approved light fixtures have received a Fixture Seal of Approval from the IDA.  This approval is only given to light fixtures that minimize glare, reduce light trespass, and don’t pollute the night sky.  The Minka Group is a supplier of full line of Dark-Sky approved outdoor light fixtures.  The Minka Lavery Outdoor light fixtures come in a variety of styles and finishes.

Our night skies are precious to everything that experiences them.  As individuals we can make a difference by educating ourselves and the people around us about light pollution and how to reduce it.  Take an hour to do a little research and if you have a little extra cash donate it to the remaining stars worth fighting for.

California Soon to Ban Incandescent Light Sources

California is becoming a leader in the fight against energy consumption.  California's government has proposed that the state will ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs by the year 2012.  This bill should speed up the transition to energy-efficient light sources.  Changing the average inefficient incandescent sources to the more efficient compact fluorescent sources.

How much will this lighting plan save?

The proposed goal is to reduce power while at the same time cutting carbon dioxide emissions from power plants by 1.8 million metric tons a year.  That is the same as removing 400,000 cars from the California highways.  If this bill is adopted from our other states the United States will be leading the fight to reduce the consomption of energy.

Will this reduce the selection of decorative lighting?

Yes and no.  Most lighting manufactures have already begun including compact fluorescent light source options with there more popular collections.  Minka-Lavery has a full outdoor lighting line that supports the Energystar movement.  Their line is a combination of compact fluorescent and Dark Sky products.

Dark Sky promotes the effects of outdoor lighting on night sky light pollution.  Every Dark Sky light fixture must have a fully shielded light source to reduce glare and enhance the night sky.  All of Minka-Lavery's Dark Sky light fixtures have attractive details the make the fixture Dark Sky compliant with out compromising style.

Undercabinet Lighting Produces Effective Task Light

There are many types of light sources that make up that great home cooking kitchen.  If you are the type of person that spends some time the kitchen creating culinary treats you know that good lighting is a big help.  Undercabinet lighting is one of the most important light sources for preforming these tasks in the kitchen.

Why is Under Cabinet Lighting so Effective?

Usually in a kitchen you will find reccessed lighting balanced out throughout the ceiling producing light from above for specific task areas.  Undecabinet lighting eliminates shadows from the overhead reccessed lighting while working on counter space task areas.  It also adds a nice soft light when illuminated by themselves without the overhead reccessed lights on, a little more romantic type setting for the kitchen.

What type of Under Cabinet Lighting is right for your space?

Today under cabinet lighting comes in more colors than just white and is offered in different light sources other than fluorescent.  More and more under cab lights are being offered in the now popular oil-rubbed bronze and brushed steel finishes.  The light sources that they are being offered with today are fluorescent, halogen and xenon.  Xenon halogen has proven to be the most effective with longer lamp life than halogen, crisp white light and dimmable by a standard incandescent dimmer

Current Lighting Fixture Trends in a Quiet Market

The Most Our lighting designers have put together lighting packages in many new homes in Florida recently and have found the following trends most commonly used.  The strongest trend among our customers has been where multiple trends that have been used with in the same home.
At both ends of the scale from large to small, simple to complicated, it seems that the more lighting evolves, the more it explodes in all directions," said Joe Rey-Barreau, associate professor of interior design at the University of Kentucky.

The Look Most Prominent in Lighting is Eclectic

Combining a hodge-podge of shapes and textures, such as combining wrought iron with crystal, is hot.  Setting dainty mini crystal chandeliers over the bath tub (after the electrical inspection is passed of course).  Many customers have mixed traditional chandeliers on the formal areas then set a contemporary hanging pendant on both sides of the bedroom operated by remote.

The mixing of styles from room to room is becoming more acceptable.

Modern or Casual Contemporary Lighting Fixtures

This trend has included many small bright colored hand blown Murano pendants and brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze hardware.  Many common shapes have included linear shapes with nonsymmetrical qualities and arms of varying shapes and sizes.  Many Murano glass chandeliers in the more high end homes.

Over sized traditional fixtures

With many homes getting bigger in size and ceiling heights being higher the lighting fixtures in demand are growing in size.  Traditional fixtures from Fine Art Lamps one of the most prestigious lighting lines in existence is available has a vast variety of over sized fixtures.  There are more traditional large fixtures to choose from but some companies like Eurofase are making large contemporary fixtures.

Decorative Fixtures in Any Location

It used to be that decorative fixtures were usually found in dining areas and entry foyers.  Today customers are wanting them everywhere from closets to bathrooms.  Mini chandeliers are showing up in these areas mainly.

There is no room that doesn't have the possibility of having a chandelier in it, Ray-Barreau says.

Incandescent or Halogen which do you prefer?

Incandescent lamps are the most commonly used of all the lamps in use.  Incandescent lamps create light by heating a tungsten wire filament enough to produce a glow.  These lamps produce a warm yellow glow that most people relate to as the "old home" feeling.  The incandescent lamp has low efficiency, and a short lamp life.

Halogen lamps are a type of incandescent light that offers more efficient, whiter light and longer lasting lamp life.

Incandescent lamps verses halogen lamps

Conventional incandescent light has been a standard in homes dating back to Edison.  This soft yellow light gives you that warm "old home" feeling.  This lamp is used most in portable lamps, recessed fixtures and decorative chandeliers.  These lamps are low in cost and have a short lamp life.

As we age our eyesight begins to weaken more and more making this warm yellow light harder to see by.  This yellow light also makes colors and shapes not look exactly as they are.  Reading is a little harder under this light making words seem a little fussy at times and also making the reader a little more tired due to the soft feel.

Halogen light has a much whiter crisper light making it easier to see shapes and colors as they are.  Halogen may not have that "old home" feeling but its functionality and efficiency make up for it.  When reading under halogen light words seem more crisp and the reader tends to feel more awake due to the intensity of light.

Halogen lamps are a bit more expensive with all the extra expense save in lamp life.  Lamp life really adds up when you think about the time you are out of light before changing out the old lamp, having to go to the store to buy a new lamp and then the labor involved in the relamping.  What some people don't realize is that when dimming halogen light you can still acheive that soft yellow feel.  Most halogen lamps can be dimmed with a standard incandescent dimmer

Why I have choosen halogen

I chose halogen because the lamp is just more efficient.  Yes, halogen is a bit more hot but when dimmed it is much cooler.  The light is easier to see by and has a better color rendition.  I have changed all of my lamps to halogen except in the dining room so I can still have that "old home cooked" feel at supper time.

How to Install a Large Dining Room Chandelier

Large chandeliers can be a beautiful addition to any dining room provided that there are other sources of light present.  If the chandelier is the only source of light over a dining room table it will seem glary.  It is preferred to have evenly distributed recessed fixtures along with wall Lighting sconces so all of the light sources can be dimmed with a dimmer to provide an even distribution of light.

What size chandelier is right for your space?

Chandelier size is usually measured by diameter, height, and the number of lamps.  Of course the more lamps a chandelier has the larger it usually is.  Chandeliers come with different number tiers meaning each tier is one row of arms that hold the lamp, usually a 3 to 6 light would be a single tier chandelier.  There are also two tier, three tier and four tier chandeliers.  An average chandelier for the typical dining room (10'W  x 10'L x 8'CLG) would be a 4 to 6 light, 26" to 30" diameter chandelier.

The below factors may help when choosing the Light fixture that is right for you.

  • The chandelier should usually be centered over the dining table and not exceed 10" from either side of the edge of the table beneath.
  • The chandelier should be about 26" to 30" off the dining room table
  • Taller dining room ceilings can use two or three tiered chandeliers
  • For longer dining room tables two smaller chandeliers can be used
  • Size the chandelier to the room not to the amount of light it puts out.
  • Decorative lighting chain sleeves and medallions can be used for an added elegance
  • Bowl pendants can often be used

Remember that there is no exact formula for the exact chandelier for your space it is really more of a balance of room size, architecture and furniture shapes.  So, if you have a dining room with a 20 foot ceiling, a 15 foot long table and you want a mini chandelier cause you like it, go for it.  Interior design to me is really a calculated art form of self expression in the home.  The most important part putting together your home is to have fun.

Having trouble choosing a chandelier to fit your space

Many people decide that interior design is not there specialty or they just don't have enough time for it.  In these cases there are interior design organizations with enough information to help you find the resources you need to finish your project.  Below is a list of interior design resources.

The above are the most well known organizations of interior design.  They have proved helpful to us finding solutions to almost any design problem.

Designing & Installing a Tech Lighting Monorail System

The Tech Lighting Monorail System is a system of unlimited imagination. With a little creativity, patience and some advanced handyman / electrical skills you can build the Monorail to be functional and a beautiful system of architectural light. The following will show you the how to steps and tips we have learned through designing, installing and many many mistakes of over thirty Tech Lighting Monorail track systems.

Tools and hardware you will need for the installation

  • Plumb Bob (laser prefered)
  • Battery Drill with phillips bit
  • Hand level
  • Hacksaw (if cutting sections)
  • Vise
  • Ladder (height to be determined by ceiling height)
  • Masking tape
  • Bending plywood block (if curved sections)
  • Voltage tester
  • Pencil
  • Graph paper
  • Measuring Tape

Begin With: Designing your MonoRail System Check List

  1. In the design phase of your project, start with understanding what you want to light. Sometimes sunlight gets in the way so be sure to do this at night and in the day. This will give you an understanding of the functionality of your lighting system and a general direction of where the track will need to be. This is probably the most important step.
  2. At this point you want to use the measuring tape to measure out the room from side to side to side. That maybe too many sides. Begin sketching out your track system layout. This will help you find the shape of the track you are about to install by sketching until the desired shape is found. Remember that the Monorail System can be curved by hand to fit your architectural space.
  3. Remember that the MonoRail Run must be placed so it goes directly over the powered junction box.
  4. This leads you to the decision of what style and what colors compliment your space.
  5. You will need to decide which spot light heads and/or Tech Lighting pendants you will want to use if lighting specific items and where they will be located on the monorail system.
  6. With the proper measurements and a final drawing you will be able to determine how many pieces of rail you will need. Remember to add a pair of end caps to each end of the run.

Determine How much Lighting and what hardware will be needed

Add the number of spot light heads and Tech Lighting pendants together then multiply them by the bulb wattage in each to determine the wattage of the transformer. Surface mount transformers can be used on almost all ceiling surfaces and simply mount directly to the junction box beneath the run. The surface mounts look like neat little spaceships attached to the ceiling. A remote transformer with a power feed canopy will provide a cleaner look but, the remote transformer must be located in a semi-near location accounting for voltage drop to the power feed canopy.

Based on the ceiling height and the location of the items wanted to light determine how far from the ceiling you want the system to drop. Standard power feed canopies drop the MonoRail System two inches from the ceiling. The surface mount systems are determined by what size transformer is needed from two to five inches.

If you desire the rail to be lower than what is standard than you will need to add a power extender to the power feed canopy or the surface mount transformer. The maximum drop for the MonoRail Track System is eight feet.

The size of the rigid standoff rail anchors can be determined by matching the drop of the power feed to the Monorail System. If an extender is used add the distance of the power extender and the surface transformer or power feed canopy distance to determine the size of the standoff. Adjustable cable standoffs can be used as well but, are not recommended for curved tracks. You’ll need a standoff for every three feet of run and the power feed from the transformer counts as one standoff. Note that power extenders and standoff’s are field cut-able so you can customize your MonoRail height.

Installation of your Tech Lighting MonoRail Track System

  1. Receive and check in all of the specified parts that you will need for your shiny new track system.
  2. Begin by taping off where the furniture that will be beneath the MonoRail System is before moving it out of the way. This will give you a feel as to where the furniture will be while you lay the system out on the floor.
  3. Assemble the MonoRail on the floor by mirroring its exact location as it would be on the ceiling. Make all necessary cuts and curves that relate to the sketch made.
  4. Connect and mount the surface transformer or the power feed canopy on the existing junction box.
  5. Measure out the placement of all the standoffs on the ground marking the track at each location.
  6. Use the Laser Plumb Bob to determine the location of the ceiling anchors that will secure the standoffs to the ceiling. I like to stand on a ladder and mark the ceiling with a sharpie where every the laser falls. Be sure not to look into the laser as it damages our eyes, just another problem we don’t need.
  7. Each standoff comes with a drywall anchor that will be used at each mark done by the sharpie marker. If you have a concrete slab as in many condos a small 3/8” anchor can be used and set with a 3/8” masonry drill bit.
  8. Mount all of the standoffs in the ceiling. Be sure not to over tighten or the anchor might loose its anchor. Remove all of the lower mounting harnesses on each standoff.
  9. With a little help raise the assembled MonoRail track system fitting it into each standoff and the power feed. Tighten each harness by loosening the Alan key that allows the base to rotate screwing in the lower mounting harness.
  10. Level out the system by using the hand level and adjusting each standoff. By this time you may want to do it by eye but the level always proves to be right.
  11. Insert the end caps for that cleaned up end look.
  12. Assemble and place the spot light heads in there desired place on the Monorail run.
  13. The pendants take a little more effort. The splice on the pendant is the hardest part of this step so take your time and follow the instructions closely when modifying pendant cord length.
  14. Run the system for 20 minutes.
  15. Turn off the system and check for any connections that are hot to the touch. Warm is acceptable. Note that halogen lamps generate heat. Those connections that are hot must be retightened.
  16. Your Tech Lighting MonoRail System is ready to rock and roll
  17. If you need any further assistance during your installation call your Tech Lighting Monorail Experts.

Energy Star fans can help you save

With costs rising, I run into people who are trying to save a few bucks anywhere they can. Central air conditioning can drive up electricity costs. That’s why ceiling fans that are Energy Star compliant can be the answer.

Energy Star fans are 50% more efficient than ceiling fans without the Energy Star certification. You can save up to $20 a year this way. Reversible fans can be used in the winter to help trim heating costs. Some fans require you to flip a switch on the fan body itself; other fans have a button on the control you can push to reverse the way it spins. This can be handy for fans on higher ceilings. Emerson Fans is an example of a company that sells Energy Star Compliant fans.

In addition to heating/cooling, Energy Star fans with built-in lighting are more efficient and longer lasting than non Energy Star fans, saving more money with fewer bulb changes. If your fan didn’t come with integrated lighting, buy an Energy Star light kit or fitter to receive the savings on lighting.

Also note than the fan size may be important. Placing a small fan in a large room won’t help you as much as it could. To help you figure out the appropriate fan size, consult this chart:

Room Dimensions Suggested Fan Size
Up to 75 ft2 29 – 36"
76 – 144 ft2 36 – 42"
144 – 225 ft2 44"
225 – 400 ft2 50 – 54"

Which Lighting or Ceiling Fan Factory is NOT in China

Does any lighting or ceiling fan manufacture still manufacture in the United states?   Many still do, but so many are in China.  There is some contriversy about how the USA is giving too much manufacturing work to China.  What does that mean for our future and for China's?

Where is Lighting & Ceiling Fan manufacturing going?

China's economy cannot be underestimated when China's nickname has become "the world's largest factory", the importance of industrial parks to China's economy is crucial. To date, state-level industrial parks have already secured more than one-third of total foreign investment in China.   All the different regions are have there own strengths and weaknesses of manufacturing.

These industrial parks consist of many more than just the following

  • Lighting and all types of electrical parts
  • Ceiling fans and all types of appliances
  • bio-pharmaceuticals
  • Automobiles
  • Motorcycles

Much of this information can be found at China Knowledge

What has all of this Lighting manufacturing done to the USA?

Many U.S. manufacturers are challenged like never before. They are on the front lines of the most intense world competition in history where it is virtually impossible to raise prices. Yet, costs do rise, often because of what government does or does not do.  More of this info is at NAM

Our own lighting and ceiling fan factories have begun raising product value by:

  • There use of Unilateral Pricing Policies (Which has been effective)
  • Nationwide media advertising campaignes
  • Increased service and support
  • More lighting and ceiling fan education

The below lighting factories still manufacture most products in USA

You can see all of these points while shopping for ceiling fans at Del Mar Designs.

How to Educate Your Team about Lighting

Most of the people that I have met outside of the lighting industry really beleive that there is not much to lighting.  I guess most people just don't know.  This lack of understanding is why I beleive it is the people in our industry who should take the time to educate our selves so we can add value to our industry.  With that I have put togather some helpful info and sources to guide anyone willing, to educate them selves.

ALA the Lighting Educator in our industry

With all the education in the US lighting education is limited to a half a dozen institutions and ALA seems to be used the most.

 (ALA) American Lighting Association

The ALA is what we think to be the most widley used in the United States lighting and ceiling fan industry.  How do you do it?

  • Acheive LIGHTING ASSOCIATE by completing 12 of ALA's lighting courses online at the price of $ 39.00 each course.
  • LIGHTING SPECIALIST gets a bit more involved with a self study manual that is about four inches thick and the questions are much harder than in the Lighting Associate course.  Purchase the manual online at the ALA it costs $ 251.50.  Answer all of the unit tests, the tests in the end of the manual, call ALA to request the final exam for the RTL Manual, pass the 100 question exam with at least 80% and become a Lighting Specialist.
  • CLC Certified Lighting Consultant first you have to become a lighting specialist.  There are self study courses or you can attend other courses around the country to attain up to (40) credit hours or you must have five years in the lighting industry.  There are many CLC approved courses provided by manufactures to earn credit hours.  Once you have accomplished the hours needed call ALA for a CLC Application.  You will then return the application with a payment $ 180.00 I am sure they take all forms.  A letter explaining requirements and a set blueprints will be mailed to you.  You then have 6 months to finish the requirements and return it to ALA.

These requirements will get you to one of the highest non collage based lighting certifications in the US.  We would be thrilled to assist with any questions or you can visit us at Lighting and Ceiling fan questions
